Retainer Instructions for Wisdom Teeth Extractions
Wisdom teeth extractions will not cause problems with your retainers, if you can follow some simple instructions.
To try to ensure that your teeth don’t move after wisdom teeth extractions, please follow the instructions below:
• If you are currently wearing your retainer full-time (as instructed by Dr. Marshall)
o Wear your retainer full-time (except for eating/drinking, and brushing/flossing), starting from the time the numbness wears off on the day of your extraction.
o Wear full-time for 3 days. Then, reduce back to night-time only wear.
• If you are currently wearing your retainer night-time only (as instructed by Dr. Marshall)
o Wear your retainer full-time (except for eating/drinking, and brushing/flossing), starting from the time the numbness wears off on the day of your extraction.
o Wear full-time.
• Do NOT wait a few days to start wearing your retainers.
• It’s important to keep your retainers clean, to minimize infections after wisdom teeth removal.
o If you don’t currently use a retainer cleaner daily already, I highly recommend DentaSoak (go to dentasoak.com and from there, it’ll take you to a specific vendor on Amazon).
o If you prefer something you can buy from a brick & mortar store, then Retainer Brite may work for you.
o Brush your retainer gently with a denture brush before you soak it in retainer cleaner solution.
